Science (Forensic science)

Today you will be a Forensic Chemist.

A bag of white powder has been confiscated by airport customs.  You need to find out what white powder it is?

Aim: To learn about the makeup of different white powders.

There are a number of different white powders in our everyday lives. Some of these are harmful and others are not. Test the four white powders listed to see which one has been found at the airport.

You will be given a small amount of 4 white powders on your cardboard. On the black cardboard using a magnifying glass look at the powders.
Look at them under your magnifying glass and record what you see.

These are the four powders we will be using. Upload a photo of each powder.

1.  Cornflour
2.  Baking Soda
3.  Salt
4.  Sugar

Before you add the iodine, vinegar or water you will need to divide each powder into 3.
Materials
1.  Cornflour
2.  Sugar
3.  Baking soda
4.  salt
5.  Water
6.  Vinegar
7. Magnifier
8. cardboard paper

Steps
1. Get cardboard paper and magnifier
2. Fold the paper into four
3. write the name sugar, cornflour, baking soda, and salt in each square
4.  Put in the ingredients that you wrote
5.  Use the magnifier to look at the ingredients6.

Write a conclusion about your findings. ( 4 plus sentences)
Use the Hexagon activity to give you some more ideas.

The sugar It was small like when we add the liquids it would just absorb it.

The salt was the same as the sugar but instead, the liquids would go to the bottom of the salt

The Baking Soda the liquids would stay where you put it

The cornflour the liquids would bounce off the cornflour

Do all the same experiments on the mystery white powder. What is it?
Baking soda it's because the things we did to the mystery powder happened to the baking soda that's how we figured out that it was baking soda

  1. Hi Tyler.
This looks like you have had a lot of fun in science.
I like how you told us what the powders would look like when you add the liquids to them.
Next time add some pictures to show us what to do as well but otherwise good work.

To support my learning I ask you to comment as follows:
1. Something positive - something you like about what I have shared.
2. Thoughtful - A sentence to let us know you actually read/watched or listened to what I had to say
3. Something thoughtful - how have you connected with my learning? Give me some ideas for next time or ask me a question.
